We aren't supposed to pick favorites but we all know we have them! Storytelling sessions are my ABSOLUTE favorite and the heart of my work. Lifestyle/partially posed images are great for walls and Christmas cards but these documentary style shoots are the types of pictures that will evoke memories and stories of our families to be told for generations to come!
What happens in a storytelling shoot: Before the shoot even begins you tell me a little about your family and the types of things you enjoy doing together. Then, together we'll come up with some activities that you can do with your crew during our time together. What kind of activities? They can be simple like baking cookies or reading a book together or they can be a little more adventurous like an outdoor activity. Whatever it is, it'll be authentic time of you with your family and I'll be there to capture it all. You can stay in your pajamas and play board games or you can get all gussied up and we can go to an outdoor festival. Lets just get those memories in beautiful images for you to have for life!
But, I still want a few posed portraits!: Ok, no problem. My storytelling sessions include a few posed portraits so you can have some beautiful material for Christmas cards and gifts and to fill your walls with. My 'posed' portraits are a little more relaxed and I try hard to capture the connection of your family in a real and fun way.
Why do these sessions cost more than the others? Well, they don't really. My other sessions are priced only for the session and then prints/digital files and products are bought separately at your disgression. Storytelling sessions are meant to tell the whole story though so I tried to put it all together for you. You'll get the session, all of the files, a customized photo book made by me (you don't have to do it! yay!) and a special video including live video of your family (see examples below).
Why are these sessions my favorite? I believe connection in families can change the world. Family dinner, game night, prayer time and anything else that brings us together in an authentic way forms our children (and us grown up children) in a way that makes us kinder, more helpful and better people for the rest of our lives. So, facilitating real moments like this with families and capturing beautiful memories for you to look at over and over and relive is a special mission for me. In addition, I truly came to love these types of photos after my own Father's death. My great uncle was a photographer and because of him we had lots of great memories of my dad captured in a beautiful way. I never met my great uncle but his photos provided an opportunity for healing and beautiful storytelling at my dad's funeral. People remembered things about my dads life that I had never heard and told me stories because of the images that we had displayed there. It was such a beautiful moment in the midst of suffering for me and I was eternally grateful that someone was there to capture those moments on film.
